OPERATION MOSQUITO G.R.I.D.

Growth Reduction & Increased Detection

Middle School Community Science

Your child's science teacher has partnered with the San Gabriel Valley Mosquito and Vector Control District to find and eliminate mosquito habitats in your neighborhood! Operation Mosquito G.R.I.D. (Growth Reduction, Increased Detection) mobilizes young scientists to get mosquitoes off the grid. Students will use a specialized mosquito tools to learn about and monitor for Aedes mosquitoes!

STUDENT OBJECTIVES
  1. Clear the area around their home of all stagnant water and remove all containers, wet or dry

  2. Identify presence of invasive Aedes mosquitoes

  3. Report evidence to "Headquarters" (San Gabriel Valley Mosquito and Vector Control District)

STUDENT STEPS

Step 1:
Create an Agent File

Student enrollment includes 2 steps:

1. Parent Permission Slip

2. Pre-assessment Survey

Steps 2 & 3:
Clear Your Yard of enemy hideouts

Students take samples of any trapped water on their property.

 

Tip out the remaining trapped water, toss out all containers, & set the lure. 

Analyze the water sample to identify mosquitos & other aquatic organisms.

Step 4:
Set a mosquito egg lure for one week (water, black cup, germination paper).

Students analyze their "egg papers" & submit the results of their mosquito egg lure.

Take Agent assessments

Periodic online surveys that asks the exact same questions as the pre-assessment.
