December Newsletter: 2021 Highlights

Hello Educators,

Our education specialists and communications team works tirelessly to promote public health and S.T.E.A.M. education in a fun and engaging way year round. We hope your classroom will “bug out” with us in 2022!

In January, Danny Woo, Geri Varela, and Giselle Argüello were awarded the 2020 Public Health Teachers of the Year for their hands-on, remote learning using enhanced science curriculum during the 2020 school year. We’ll be announcing the 2021 awardee soon!

We developed a new NGSS-aligned booklet of resources exploring mosquitoes and insects for grades K - 3. Individual pages can be downloaded and printed for free from the EcoHealth Vector Education website.

Recognize this ride?

Our EcoHealth vehicle got a new look! You’ll see our education team riding around the District in this vehicle to transmit information about vector-borne disease and prevention.

This West Nile virus Escape Room was released at the start of 2021. It is a great educational opportunity for small groups of students, Scouts, or as an extracurricular activity!

Published mid-year and played by students and residents, Mosquito Lotería has been extremely popular in classrooms, summer programs, community events, and extracurricular activities.

A unique interactive educational experience was developed, produced, released, and presented at the Entomological Society of America Annual Conference in November.

Our VIP video was refreshed and continues to encourage the identification of larval mosquitoes, especially Aedes species which were first identified in the San Gabriel Valley in 2011. Your K - 6 students can team up with Agents Hagele and Luna and the Rubio family to identify mosquitoes and their habitats.

Over 100 students signed up for our citizen science programs Operation Mosquito G.R.I.D. and the Vector Inspector Program (V.I.P.) this fall. Water sample and Aedes egg luring results from students around the district are available for public viewing!

Girl Scouts gained vector control knowledge with our education specialist. Our presentations are excellent resources for troop badges and fun, informative activities.
